Moving is one of the most stressful experiences you can have. It’s expensive, it takes up a lot of time and energy, and it could be complicated. For these reasons, we’ve compiled this list of moving items that are absolutely essentials to ensure a successful move.

Boxes (Many, Many Boxes)

Packing is a lot of work. Luckily, there are several types of boxes at the store that can make packing easier and more efficient.

The most important thing to remember when buying boxes is that each room in your house should have identification so the movers know which rooms they’re supposed to be put into. If you don’t do this, they’ll just dump all your stuff into one giant pile and leave without helping you move at all!

You should also get more than enough boxes. If there is one rule of moving is that you are always finding out you had more stuff than you thought you had.

Labels and Markers

Labels and markers are a must when it comes to packing up your belongings. We mentioned identification, and we highly recommend that you try using color or big labels. The easier it is to identify each box, the faster the movers will be able to get them into their respective rooms. You should also identify fragile items and signs such “THIS END UP” so that your belongings are not placed upside down.

Packing Tape and Bubble Wrap

When packing any items, you will want to make sure that you have enough packing tape. If you are only using bubble wrap, it is important to remember that while the bubbles are great at protecting fragile items and items with a lot of glass components, they do not offer much protection against heavy objects. Packing tape is preferred for these situations as it offers more support than bubble wrap does.

Utility Knife

A utility knife is one of the most essential items for moving. Use it to cut open boxes, cut through tape and other materials, and even as a screwdriver.

First-Aid Kit

It’s a good idea to have a first-aid kit on hand in your car, especially if you’re traveling with children or pets. You can buy one at the drugstore or make your own by gathering up the following items:

Bandages and/or bandage tape
Antiseptic wipes
Pain relief tablets (ibuprofen or acetaminophen)
Plasters

Cash and Change

Cash and change are essential for the moving party. For example, if you’re having a moving celebration with friends and family, cash is a straightforward way to buy snacks and drinks for everyone. It’s also great for tipping the movers at the end of their long day!

Phone Charger

You’ll definitely want to keep your phone charged during the move. Aside from the obvious use for communication, you might need a GPS or even a nice playlist for the trip. Keep your phone charged the day before the move and don’t forget to have your phone charger in your travel bag.

Toiletry Bag

This bag is for toiletries and medications. Fill it with:

Shampoo, conditioner, body wash, toothpaste and toothbrush (and floss)
Deodorant, lotion and hairbrush (and comb)

You may also want to bring along any prescription or over-the-counter medications that you use regularly.

Snacks and Water

It’s a good idea to keep a few snacks on hand for the day of moving. You’re going to be expending a lot of energy, and you’ll also want something to munch on when you’re taking breaks or waiting around while the movers load up the van.

Snacks also make great stress-relievers during stressful times like moving and running around town trying to get all your errands done before you move.
